Jomo is an Ethiopian American artist and industrial designer who develops African themed furniture. As a young boy growing up in Ethiopia, he was always drawn to the eclectic art, souvenirs, and furniture pieces his father collected during his travel throughout Africa and beyond. That combined with spending two summer breaks at a local furniture builder in Addis Ababa, catapulted his interest in furniture making and design.
Jomo graduated from The University of Kansas with a degree in Industrial Design. In 1993, as part of his graduation requirement, he defended his thesis by designing a full line of African furniture concluding that the market needed an alternative to popular and established furniture styles. Ever since then Jomo has been designing his own unique furniture based on African hand-carvings, traditional stools and chairs, historical structures, indigenous dresses and hair styles, body art and scarification and other inspirational items from all the diverse cultures of Africa.
Jomo's work has been shown at Downtown Design Dubai 2016; Venice Design 2017 in Venice, Italy; at Africa by Design in Accra, Ghana.
